Description

This course covers the requirements of HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation and HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year nursing students at Murdoch University.

Overview

This course covers the following:

HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Knowledge:

  • State/Territory regulations, first aid codes of practice and workplace procedures;
  • Legal, workplace and community considerations;
  • Airway obstruction due to body position;
  • Appropriate duration and cessation of CPR;
  • Appropriate use of an AED;
  • Chain of Survival;
  • Standard precautions; and
  • Basic anatomy and physiology relating to: 
    • How to recognise a person is not breathing normally;
    • Chest;
    • Response/consciousness; and
    • Upper airway and effect of positional change.

Performance Criteria:

  • Respond to an emergency situation;
  • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor;
  • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface; and
  • Communicate details of the incident.

HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care

Knowledge

  • State/Territory legislation and impacts on workplace regulations, first aid codes of practice, industry standards and workplace procedures;
  • Legal, workplace and community considerations;
  • Infection control;
  • Safety symbols and their meanings;
  • Hazard identification and strategies to minimise risk; 
  • Safety considerations whilst working in a home based environment; and
  • Workplace emergency procedures.

Performance Criteria

  • Contribute to a workplace WHS meeting or inspection
  • Conduct a workplace risk assessment and record the results
  • Consistently apply workplace safety procedures in the day-to-day work activities required by the job role, including:
    • Infection control;
    • Hazardous manual tasks;
    • Use of personal protective equipment; and
    • Reporting incidents.
  • Followed workplace procedures for at least one simulated emergency situation.

Requirements

Completion of online pre-learning is required prior to arrival at the face-to-face session in class

Students must  be  able to walk , bend and move freely and be able to perform manual tasks and  perform CPR on the floor for  2 minutes  continuously.
